US beef exports maintain momentum
09/03/2017
The volume of beef exports in January came in at 96,488 tonnes, a 17% increase year-on-year. The total value of these exports was $515.5 million, 18% higher than in January 2016. USMEF said this represented the highest ever value for beef exports in the month of January.
It added that Japan and South Korea “continued to be the pacesetters” for US beef at the start of 2017. Exports to Japan were up 34% in both volume and value, while sales in South Korea grew 35% in volume and 36% in value. South Korea imported US beef worth more than $1 billion for the first time in 2016.
“The red meat industry entered 2017 with an optimistic outlook, confident that we can continue our recent strong momentum in the international markets,” said Philip Seng, USMEF president and CEO. “The January results certainly validate that feeling, but we understand that significant challenges still lie ahead.”
