The value of these exports was $588.2 million, 22% higher year-on-year. Through the first quarter of 2017, US beef exports were up 15% in volume and 19% in value.
March’s beef exports represented 12.5% of total US beef production. USMEF pointed out that the average export value per head of fed slaughter was 11% higher than in 2016.
“The US is not just moving more meat internationally because we have more available,” explained Philip Seng, USMEF President and CEO. “Our products are commanding solid prices and winning back market share in many key destinations, even with a strong US dollar and many trade barriers still in place”.
Japan was again the leading destination for US beef exports in March, with volume up 41% and value up 39%. It was a strong quarter in South Korea, where exports grew 23% in volume and 30% in value.
USMEF also revealed that exports to South Africa recorded their highest level since the market was reopened to US beef at the start of 2016.
