Strong start to 2018 for US beef exports

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has said “solid international demand” for US beef is allowing the country’s producers to export their products at higher prices.

In the first quarter of 2018, US beef exports were 9% higher in volume and 19% in value year on year. This came off the back of a new monthly value record in March. Exports accounted for 13.2% of total production during the first three months of the year.

The volume of exports going to Japan, the leading market for US beef, fell 3%, but these exports were worth 8% more than in the same period of 2017.

The highlights for the US beef industry in the first quarter included South Korea, where exports increased 22% in volume and 37% in value, and South America, where exports were 42% higher in volume and 46% higher in value.
