US beef exports down in first quarter

The US exported more than 307,000 tonnes of beef worth a total of $1.9 billion in the first quarter of 2019, data released by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) shows. These figures represent a fall of 3% in volume and 0.8% in value compared to the same period of last year.

The average value per head in the first quarter was $309.32, down 2% year-on-year. Exports made up 12.9% of total US beef production in the first quarter, compared to 13.2% a year ago. 

South Korea remains the most important export market for US beef. In the first quarter, the country paid $414.2 million for more than 56,000 tonnes. This represents an increase of 8% in value and of 13% in volume.
