US beef exports down slightly in value in January

The volume of beef exports dropped 1% year-on-year in January, although the value of these exports increased 3%. More than 104,000 tonnes of beef were exported during the month for a total value of $642.3 million.

The export value per head of fed slaughter could not keep up its pace from 2018, dropping 3% to $284.86. In January, exports accounted for 12.2% of total beef production, down from 12.4% in the same month of 2018. 

Japan remains the leading market for US beef. Its exports increased 8% in volume and 12% in value compared to January 2017. Exports to South Korea were also up, by 4% in volume and by 10% in value.
