Good news for US meat exporters

22/05/2019
The Mexican government has removed retaliatory duties on US pork and Canada has stopped its 10% tariff on beef after the US reached an agreement on steel and aluminium tariffs.

The move has been described as a “tremendous breakthrough for the US red meat industry” by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

This also removes a significant obstacle for the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and USMEF is hopeful that “all three countries ratify USMCA as soon as possible”.

Japan has also agreed to eliminate longstanding restrictions on US beef exports, including the 30-month cattle age limit for the first time since 2003.

USMEF estimates this could increase US beef sales to Japan as much as 10%, or $200 million, annually.
