US beef exports struggle to match record highs of 2018

29/04/2019
US beef exports fell in both volume and value in February, continuing what has been an uncertain start to the year for an industry coming to terms with shifts in the global trade landscape.

In February, the US exported nearly 95,000 tonnes of beef for a total value of $581.6 million, respective declines of 6% and 3% compared to the same month of 2018. Exports accounted for 12.8% of total US beef production last month, compared to 13.6% the previous year.

For the first two months of the year, beef exports were down 3% in volume but steady in value. The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), which provides this data, said this was mainly due to lower exports to Hong Kong and Canada.

There was better news from other markets, including Japan and South Korea. Beef exports to Japan were 8% higher in volume and 10% in value year-on-year in the first two months of 2019. Similarly, exports to South Korea were up 7% in volume and 11% in value.
