China poised to start importing US beef

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced it has reached an agreement with China officials on the final details of a protocol that will allow the US to begin exporting beef to China.

It was revealed in May that a provisional deal had been agreed as part of a new US-China economic cooperation agreement that resulted from meetings between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Florida in April. At the time, the US department of commerce said it expected shipments of US beef to China to begin “no later than July 16, 2017.

“Today is a great day for the United States and in particular for our cattle producers, who will be regaining access to an enormous market with an ever-expanding middle class,” said Sonny Perdue, US Secretary of Agriculture, when announcing the agreement over the final details of the deal.

For his part, the president and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), Philip Send, said he was “pleased” that the US will soon be able to resume beef exports to China after a “suspension that has lasted more than 13 years”.
