China to start importing US beef by mid-July
12/05/2017
On May 11, the US department of commerce said that “on conditions consistent with international food safety and animal health standards”, shipments of US beef to China will begin “as soon as possible but no later than July 16, 2017.
As part of the same agreement, Chinese companies will be able to export cooked poultry to the US.
In its statement, the department of commerce also said that the US “recognises the importance of China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative” and is to send delegates to attend a special forum on this development in Beijing on May 14 and 15.
Unveiled in 2013, OBOR is a wide-reaching development strategy that China has initiated as part of a push to take a bigger role in global affairs. One component is the Silk Road Economic Belt that focuses on land-based projects such as rail links between China, central Asia and Europe. Another is the Maritime Silk Road, under which China will make investments in transport and energy infrastructure projects in trading partner countries. For example, new links have already been built with Pakistan: infrastructure projects allow Chinese-made goods to be transported by land to the port of Gwadar in Pakistan for onward shipment by sea from there.
