US beef remains “extremely competitive” in key markets

Data from the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has shown that the US exported 105,321 tonnes of beef during May for a value of $582.6 million. These figures represent respective increases of 6% and 9%. 

Exports accounted for 13% of total US beef production in May, steady with the level of 2016. 
Japan continued to be the leading market for US beef, taking in 9% more in volume and 24% more in value. 

The volume of beef export to South Korea fell 8%, but these shipments were worth 2% more in value. 
There was also strong performance in Taiwan, where exports increased 24% in volume and 20% in value, and Hong Kong, which imported 29% more in volume and 36% more in value. 

“We remain in an extremely competitive situation in each of our key markets,” said Philip Seng, USMEF president and CEO.
