US beef industry appeals to President over China access

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has sent a letter to US President Donald Trump asking him to raise the issue of access for US beef to China when he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping in April.

The letter was signed by leaders from the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and the North American Meat Institute.

“We believe that access to the large and growing Chinese beef market is essential to the future health of the US beef industry,” the letter read. “We understand that you have many important issues to discuss with President Xi, but we strongly encourage you to take this important opportunity to convey the urgent need for China to reopen its market to US beef.”

The letter described the beef industry as “a vitally important part” of the US agricultural economy and said it was one of the largest employers in rural communities across the country. Exports are critical to the profitability of the industry, it continued, and it makes a “significant contribution” to the US balance of trade for food and agricultural products.
