China lifts ban on US beef

China has lifted its ban on imports of US beef, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has announced.

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) said the move is “an important first step in the process of resuming beef exports to China”, but that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) still needs to negotiate the conditions that will apply to US beef products entering the country.

“We look forward to prompt engagement by the relevant authorities for further technical discussions on the specific conditions that will allow trade to resume,” said Tom Vilsack, US agriculture secretary, who described the lifting of the ban as a “critical first step”.

China banned imports of US beef in 2003 following an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
