The US exported 1.19 million tonnes of beef during 2016 for a value of $6.34 billion, according to the year-end figures from the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

This represented an increase of 11% in volume and 1% in value compared to 2015. Exports accounted for 13.7 percent of total US beef production in 2016

In December, a total of 116,847 tonnes of beef were exported, up 24% year-on-year. USEMF said this was the largest monthly volume since July 2013 and the largest ever in December. The total value of these exports was $619.1 million, a 22% increase.

2016 saw new value records for beef exports to South Korea and Taiwan, with sales to Japan also bouncing back.

South Korea imported 179,280 tonnes of US beef during the 12 months, up 42%. This was valued at $1.06 billion, 31% higher year-on-year and 20% more than the previous value record for the country.

Exports to Taiwan increased 25% in volume and 14% in value.

“In addition to the strength of the US dollar, US beef overcame other severe challenges in these north Asian markets and achieved remarkable results,” said Philip Seng, USMEF president and CEO.
