US wants beef complaint process against Indonesia to continue

According to the US Meat Export Federation, a complaint process to the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding beef exports from the US to Indonesia should continue, even though the Asian country has relaxed its position.

US beef exports to Indonesia achieved a record value in 2016, reaching $33 million in the first 11 months of the year, in spite of what USMEF has referred to as “restrictive measures”. The US and New Zealand have both filed complaints to the WTO about import restrictions that, in their view, prevent them from selling more beef than they do to Indonesia.

However, USMEF said in recent comments: “As this complaint was making its way through the WTO process, the Indonesian government eased several of its restrictive measures on imported beef, which resulted in increased trade in 2016.”

It said that the complaint process should continue, though, because a WTO decision in the US’s (and New Zealand’s) favour would help “address the volatile and unpredictable nature of Indonesia’s import policies”.
