Single case of BSE in South Carolina

25/05/2023
A case of atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), a neurologic disease of cattle, has been found in a beef cow at a slaughter plant in South Carolina.

This animal does not present a risk to the food supply or to human health, said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and it does not expect any trade impacts as a result.

The animal was tested as part of USDA’s routine surveillance of cattle that are deemed unsuitable for slaughter.

The identification tag was associated with a herd in Tennessee, where more evidence is being gathered.

Atypical BSE generally occurs in older cattle and seems to arise rarely and spontaneously in all cattle populations, added USDA.

This is the US’s seventh detection of BSE since 2003.
