Ministry delivers update on BSE in Brazil

Brazil’s agriculture ministry has published an update on the case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the state of Mato Grosso. It confirmed an atypical, isolated case at the end of May, involving an animal aged 17 years.

According to the ministry, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has declared the case closed, with no change to Brazil’s animal health status, which says the risk of further cases is “insignificant”.

It added that the OIE will issue no further reports on the case.

However, the ministry has also now confirmed that China has stopped issuing health certificates for imports of Brazilian beef. It said this suspension of imports into China of Brazilian beef will be temporary. “It will last only until the Chinese authorities conclude their assessment of all the information that has already been released about this episode,” the ministry said, “which is entirely in keeping with the protocols of a bilateral agreement Brazil signed with China in 2015.”
