BSE case confirmed in Brazil

An agricultural industry body in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, Indea, has confirmed a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) there.

Indea confirmed that a cow tested positive for BSE at an abattoir in Mato Grosso but said the immediate action of the state’s official veterinary service and the commitment of local livestock farmers meant there was “no possibility of this occurrence posing a threat to the quality of meat that Mato Grosso produces or to the health of consumers”.

Meat industry association Abiec said this was an atypical, isolated case that had affected an animal that was 17 years old and repeated the message that there was no risk of BSE spreading.

The federal ministry of agriculture added that this was only the third time in 20 years Brazil had confirmed a case of BSE.
