China lifts Brazilian beef ban

China has agreed to resume the imports of Brazilian beef, one month after placing the halt on trade following a confirmed case of BSE in the South American country.

Brazil is the largest supplier of beef to China, with exports accounting for 60% of all shipments.

The lifting of the ban came just ahead of an official visit to China by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva taking place from March 26 to 31.

During the visit, it is anticipated that President Lula will look for a relaxation of the current blanket BSE rules covering the country as a whole, asking for export suspension over the specific region or state where a case is detected.
