Burundi has become the tenth country to join the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (LLPI).

LLPI said it will “redouble its efforts to contribute towards the development of the leather industry in the country”.

The organisation is now looking to set up a regional design studio for footwear and leathergoods, with satellite studios in member states.

Representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe presented case studies on leather sector value addition and design initiatives in their countries.

LLPI was established in 1990 to promote productivity, competitiveness, trade and regional integration in the leather sub-sector.
