Kenya to ban imports of low-quality leather

Yassin Awale, an advisor to the ministry of industrialisation & enterprise development, said that the ministry is working alongside the Kenya Bureau of Standards to ensure low-quality leather products are kept out of the Kenyan market.
“Artificial leather imports are sold cheaply in Kenya and this is affecting the performance of the local leather industry,” Awale said. “Kenya’s leather industry is facing unfair competition as the public is not able to distinguish between leather and artificial leather products.”
The Kenyan government has also unveiled plans to invest in a leather industrial park on the outskirts of Nairobi. The complex will include a common effluent treatment plant.
