CLRI sees opportunities for leather sector across Africa

India’s Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) is setting up a centre for start-ups and sharing know-how with African countries in a bid to boost revenue.

In an interview with the Times of India, CLRI director B Chandrasekaran said it is working with footwear manufacturing clusters in a number of Indian states, equipping them with modern tools and methods to improve quality, and introducing them to NGOs to market the products.

It is also working on projects in Ethiopia, Botswana, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania.

Mr Chandrasekaran said: “One of the main reasons for the manufacturing hub slowly shifting to Africa is the increasing labour cost in India, and vast untapped resources. It also gives tremendous trade opportunities for India. In the leather sector, a few producers have already set up facilities in Ethiopia.”
