Ethiopia: five tanneries will benefit from Indian know-how

15/08/2011
A project established in June to help create a competitive leather industry in Ethiopia has moved on to a second state. The African country’s Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) has signed an agreement with India’s Centre for Leather Research Institute (CLRI) under which the CLRI will receive state funding to share its knowledge and expertise with Ethiopian tanneries.

In a second development, the Ethiopian government has now named five tanneries for its Indian partner to focus on. They are Addis Abeba Tannery, located in the Ascot area of Ethiopia’s capital city, Batu Tannery near the city’s Kality district; Gelan Tannery in Mojo, 73 kilometres away; Mersa Tannery 776 kilometres north of Addis Abeba; and Bahir Dar Tannery in Bahir Dar, located 477 kilometres north of the capital.

Abdissa Adugna, secretary general of the Ethiopian Leather Industry Association, has told local media that the project will enhance the export earning potential of Ethiopia’s leather industry.
