Under this collaboration, the National Design Business Incubator (NDBI) (part of the NID) and CLRI will work jointly towards developing an ecosystem for encouraging entrepreneurship in the footwear and lifestyle accessories segment.
“Chennai already has the ecosystem needed for a robust leather industry and we hope to work closely with CLRI students who might be budding entrepreneurs and have business ideas that could catapult some new brands in the leather and lifestyle accessories business,” said Mahesh Krovvidi, CEO, NDBI.
“We have made a joint proposal to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and are awaiting government sanction. The students of CLRI with relevant training in the leather technology and research would be our source pool for start-ups. We would be looking at possible corporate and venture capital funds to develop this partnership further,” he added.
CLRI already has had a strong industry-research association with the NID. The major departments engaged in the fundamental research area at CLRI include biotechnology, biomaterials, bacteriology , bio-products, polymer science and technology, chemistry, biophysics, environmental and chemical engineering.
