Indian minister praises tanning developments

India’s Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Harsh Vardhan, has praised recent developments from the Central Leather Research Institute including a biodegradable dispersing agent and an “enzymatic intervention” for opening fibres.

The CLRI says its dispersing agent enables the chrome tanning of leather with just half the normal water, which could add up to savings by 15 million litres per day in the Indian leather sector.

Visiting the centre, Mr Vardhan said: “This is good news for the Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ agenda. Our leather and leather goods industry is on the verge of unique competitiveness.”

Representatives from Stahl India and Lanxess India were present for a tour of the facilities.
