Waterless tanning technology to help Indian district

The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) is targeting a revival of the tanning industry in the Indian district of Erode by offering them new waterless chrome tanning technology.

The CLRI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Erode Tannery Owners’ Association (EROA) to help a region that has been in decline due to pollution-related restrictions. The MoU was signed by CLRI director Dr. B. Chandrasekaran and Association president Mohamed Hyder.

The technology has already undergone trials in the region and it is hoped that all 30 leather units in the district will be able to implement it once trials are complete. This breakthrough would increase the safeguarding of bodies of water from pollution, according to Dr Chandrasekaran, because there is no discharge of waste water. He added that the quality of product was comparable to chrome-tanned leather.
