India’s Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) has finalised a $1m deal for its waterless chrome tanning technology with tanneries in Ethiopia.

It held a workshop in Ethiopia in conjunction with the country’s Leather Industry Development Institute to discuss trials of the system at eight tanneries, as well as its enzyme assisted unhairing technology, which three tanneries tested.

It reported those tanners were happy with the results, with a number wanting to go ahead at a commercial scale.

It is also in talks with tanneries in Sri Lanka, Vietnam, South Africa, Kenya and Romania.
