Addis Ababa tanners upgrade water treatment facilities

03/05/2019
Four tanneries operating in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa have completed the construction of secondary water treatment plants following a request from the city’s Environmental Protection & Green Development Commission.

The four tanneries are: Abyssinia, Awash, Batu and New Wing. They have begun treating water through a secondary process that employs microorganisms to further clean the discharge, local media reports.

Dire Tannery has also constructed a new treatment facility, but it is yet to meet the Commission’s requirements. Walia Tannery is in the process of constructing one, while Addis Ababa Tannery is in the pilot stage of its own.

The Commission last year warned the seven tanneries that they must construct secondary water treatment plants within six months. This deadline was later extended to take into account challenges such as foreign currency shortage for importing machines.
