Ethiopian minister visits APLF

Ethiopian government minister Dr Arkebe Oqubay attended the 2018 APLF exhibition in Hong Kong (March 14-16).

At the event, Dr Oqubay said he is optimistic about Ethiopia’s prospects as an emerging manufacturing hub. “Our economy has been growing by 11% each year for 15 years,” he said, “and this has been entirely driven by manufacturing and agriculture.”

In 2017, he pointed out, Ethiopia recorded the highest level in Africa of foreign direct investment (FDI). “And when it comes to leather and textiles,” he added, “which are our priorities, FDI was the second-largest in the world; Ethiopia was second only to Vietnam.”

He said leather manufacturers setting up in Ethiopia have access to cheap energy and to duty-free conditions for importing tanning machinery, and he said the hides and skins supply is improving too. “We are setting up many meat processing plants because we want to export the meat,” he said. “We have had a traditional hide supply chain until now, but now it’s going to improve.”
