The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC) recently held a workshop focusing on how the two organisations can improve collaboration on a project to upgrade Ethiopia’s livestock sector.

Other entities involved in this project are the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Chinese construction company, the CGCOC Group.

Topics on the agenda included initiatives to improve the quality and safety of the country’s livestock products, such as the establishment of a pilot export zone and a meat-processing park.

“With the objective to improve the productivity and quality of livestock sector in Ethiopia, a project on upgrading the livestock value chain has been developed within the framework of Programme for Country Partnership Ethiopia,” said Dejene Tezera, director of UNIDO's department of agri-Business. “Sustainable industrialisation and scaling-up of interventions for greater impact require strong partnership between private and public sectors.”

Beyond the workshop, representatives from the CGCOC Group Ethiopia also offered an update on a proposed plan for the overall transformation of Ethiopia’s livestock sector, which includes the establishment of a disease-free zone.
