Stahl publishes new sustainability report

Leather chemicals manufacturer Stahl has published a new corporate responsibility and sustainability report, highlighting the activities it has carried out in its efforts to achieve a more transparent supply chain and reduce its environmental footprint.

In the report, Stahl also gives details of efforts to align its operations with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.

Highlights it has pointed to in this year’s report include a reduction of its CO2 emissions in 2018; Stahl says it is on course to meet a target it set itself four years ago of reducing its emissions by 10% by 2020. Initiatives that are contributing to this include an investment in solar energy at its manufacturing sites in Brazil, where 50% of the energy the company consumes is now from this renewable source.

On releasing the new sustainability report, it also highlighted the advances it has made in sharing details of its products’ compliance with restricted substance list requirements. In 2018, it shared information on more than 1,000 of its products on the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals gateway portal.

It also pointed to partnerships it launched in Ethiopia in 2018 and in India in 2017 with local leather associations and non-government organisations. Both projects aim to improve wastewater management in leather manufacturing clusters.
