South Africa in renewed push to reshore footwear manufacturing

24/04/2019
South Africa’s Footwear and Leather Industries Cluster (FLIC) has been officially approved by the government three years after its predecessor, the National Footwear & Leather Cluster (NLFC), was closed.

FLIC’s main aim is to bring footwear manufacturing back to the country, reports specialist publication S&V Leather.

Ernest Heunis will oversee leather businesses, while Jonathan Hallowes, Richard Starmer and Russell Addinall will guide footwear companies.

They will offer technical training and mentoring, and help with marketing and export logistics.

Earlier this month, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in the Western Cape allocated R132 million ($9 million) over the next three years to support manufacturing across the province.
