Representatives from the South African Footwear and Leather Export Council (SAFLEC) are among a group of around 30 business leaders taking part in a mission to Ghana, during which it is hoped new trade and investment opportunities can be sparked.

Chief among them is SAFLEC vice-chairperson, Tavonga Gonyora. His organisation represents around 200 footwear and leather manufacturers in South Africa. Its activities include opening up new markets for its members in order to boost footwear exports.

Discussing his involvement in the trade mission to Ghana, Mr Gonyora said: “The aim is to create mutually-beneficial value chains in both countries. We will provide our products to the Ghanaian entities to distribute, and they will generate revenue through the distribution of our products.”

He added that research SAFLEC has conducted about the Ghanaian leather industry suggests there are good opportunities for South African companies in the country.
