South Africa should promote full supply chain, say tanners

South Africa’s Skin, Hide and Leather Council (SHALC) discussed the advantages of a country stand at the next Asia Pacific Leather Fair (APLF) as part of a wider debate at its recent annual meeting.

Although it takes up a lot of the association's budget, many companies said it is important to have a presence, reports specialist publication S&V African Leather magazine.

One tanner said it is important to show South African producers take animal welfare seriously, and that crocodile and ostrich tanners should also take part, to “tell the whole South African story”.

Another suggested it would be useful to include feedlots, wet blue and finished leather, to show the full supply chain.
