Ostrich meat and leather merger in doubt

A merger between two South African producers of ostrich meat and leather faces opposition from the country’s competition authorities.

Mosstrich and Klein Karoo announced their intention to merge in July 2018. However, at the start of this year, the South African Competition Commission raised objections. It ruled that the proposed merger would result in “a substantial lessening of competition” in the domestic market for ostrich meat.

The commission was far less concerned about the leather sector because most of the ostrich leather that these companies produce goes for export.

Klein Karoo and Mosstrich have appealed against the ruling and the case is likely to go to tribunal later this year.
