The Indian government is committed to improving the lives of the country’s leather artisans, according to minister for social welfare, Ravela Kishore Babu. He made the comments at a workshop for artisans in the Indian city of Vijayawada.

“The state government will strive for the upliftment of artisans and has been looking to promote their products and enhance their skills in a global way’’, said Mr Kishore Babu.

He added that the government would like to revive the Leather Industries Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (LIDCAP), which oversees leather artisans in the region, and vowed to improve opportunities to improve their standard of living.

Among the steps he suggested were a concrete action plan to improve the welfare of artisans, the setting up of a fund to support them, access to training for new skills and guidance of adapting to new technology.

“We would encourage the artisans to pass on the tradition and skills to their future generations, which will run down the generations to come,” he concluded.
