14/06/2016
The Indian government has approved the establishment of a mega leather cluster in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Commerce and industry ministry Nirmala Sitharaman said in a letter to Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandra Babu Naidu that the government would invest Rs 125 crore ($18.6 million) in the development at Kota Mandal.

The project, which was sanctioned under the Indian leather devlopment programme, is expected to get underway as soon as the promised funds are released and will create start-of-the-art infrastructure for labour intensive manufacturing units. The ministry hopes that it will stimulate the generation of 20,000 jobs.

The cluster was first discussed in January 2014 when companies that wished to form part of it were asked to submit formal expressions of interest. Those invited to do so included makers of leather, footwear, footwear components, leathergoods, gloves and leather garments.
