The Indian government is to expedite work at its Sandila leather cluster in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. The new zone is expected to be complete by mid-2015, several months ahead of schedule.

Costing approximately Rs4 billion ($65.4 million), the cluster will cover around 4,047 square-metres, with around 50% devoted to small- and medium-sized leather companies. The site is expected to generate employment for more than 10,000 people.

The Sandila cluster will include effluent treatment and rainwater collecting facilities, raw material banks, warehouse space, design and exhibition centres and a human resources department.

Surya Pratap Singh, principal secretary, Infrastructure and Industrial Development Department (IIDD), said: "Establishment of the mega leather cluster at Sandila will go a long way in leveraging this inherent lead by world-class facilities and advance technology to leather industrialists.”
