Local press have reported that the West Bengal Government is forging ahead with plans to set up two effluent treatment plants and a 50-acre landfill area at the Kolkata Leather Complex.

Ramesh Kumar Juneja, eastern regional chairman of the Council of Leather Exports, told reporters: “The state government has asked Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority to prepare a detailed project report for the infrastructure required at the complex.”

The local government has also freed up land for a 130-acre footwear park within the complex, which is home to around 500 tanneries, according to reports.

The developments fit with the Indian government’s ambitious target of more than doubling leather sector turnover to $27 billion by 2020.
