The Indian government is considering providing incentives to the country’s leather sector in order to boost manufacturing output and increase exports, according to local media reports. The move comes after representatives of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) visited a leather cluster to see the issues facing the sector.

The reports said that Ministry of Commerce and Industry is willing to offer financial support to set up small and mega leather parks. Rafeeq Ahmed, Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports, said that the government should focus on the leather sector as it employs millions of people.

Ahmed added that a committee led by the secretary of the DIPP will meet on May 23 to discuss the proposed building of mega leather parks in Haryana and Andhra Pradesh.
