While Delhi and Mumbai remain India's hot spots for the luxury goods market, traditionally conservative cities such as Surat, Chennai and Kolkatta are set to welcome a raft of high-end brands.

Louis Vuitton has opened its first store in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, aiming to benefit from the increasing wealth and appetite for luxury goods and designer products.

"Chennai is a great market, full of possibilities and perspectives," said Geoffroy van Raemdonck, Louis Vuitton's head of south Europe, according to local media.

The company is also opening a store in Kolkatta, they said, where a luxury mall is in the planning stages and has already leased space to high-end retailers such as Bally and Jimmy Choo.

Armani and Burberry are among the luxury brands launching in Surat in the next six months.
