India: mega leather clusters likely to be three in number

India’s Council for Leather Exports has said its programme of setting up mega leather clusters, co-locating tanneries with supply companies, leathergoods manufacturers and effluent treatment plants on one site, looks likely to be limited to three projects.

Speaking in Chennai at the 2014 India International Leather Fair, CLE chairman, Rajendra Kumar Jalan, said two mega leather clusters, in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, are already at an advanced stage, while a third, at Krishnapatnam, also in Andhra Pradesh, is in the early stages.

In an initial announcement at the start of 2011, the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) said it had reached an agreement with the government to set up as many as seven of these sites around the country. There was a temporary set-back in 2012 when some states, including Haryana, said they wanted to set up mega leather clusters, but without tanneries.

“The government has clarified this and tanners are allowed in,” Mr Jalan said, “as long as they meet the environmental norms. As of now, we only have these three mega leather clusters. These are big projects and they require a lot of money.”
