India could be key leather supplier to Vietnam

Diep Thanh Kiet, vice chairman of the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association, has questioned why only a small percentage of the leather imported into the country comes from India.

He made the comment at a meeting with Indian companies on the side lines of the 2016 edition of the Shoes and Leather Vietnam show. The event in Ho Chi Minh city was attended by 41 Indian firms. Mr Kiet said that Indian leather was high quality and available at a good price.

Rafiq Ahmed, chairman of India’s Council for Leather Exports, said Vietnamese footwear companies should take advantage of the Indian market. He added that the country produces quality raw leather and has a large young population, which means high availability of skilled labour and competitive wages.
