India’s leather exports hit by low EU demand

Exports of leather and leather products from India dropped 8% in August to $451 million, affected by shrinking demand from the EU.

“The EU market accounts for about 65% of India's leather exports and the situation there for Indian product is not good,” said Rafeeq Ahmed, chairman of India’s Council for Leather Exports.

Despite this downturn, Mr Ahmed said he still expects exports for the current financial year to reach $6 billion. Even though “demand is not picking up”, he revealed that global orders for the next three months are positive.
