When Lawrence Chen, chief executive of Hong Kong-based footwear group Stella International,   said his company will “further emphasise” production outside its established manufacturing base in mainland China, he was referring to a process that is already quite far advanced.

Mr Chen was speaking at the release of the company’s results for the first six months of 2016.

World Leather has learned that one-third of Stella’s annual production output of around 50 million pairs is now being manufactured outside China. The company puts its Chinese production at 66% of the total, with the other 34% being made in factories elsewhere.

It confirmed that it already has production facilities up and running in four other countries in Asia: Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines.
