India: tannery waste to go to new biorefinery

25/06/2012
The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai in southern India has developed a biorefinery which will produce biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen and biomethane from tannery waste.

Dr Palani Shanmugam, a CLRI scientist, designed the refinery. At the time of the launch, he said: “One tonne of solid waste from a tannery will yield 200 litres of biodiesel, 200 litres of bioethanol, 120 cubic-metres of biohydrogen and 200 cubic-metres of methane. The cost of producing a litre of diesel through this process will be 35 cents.”
