JBS begins to export animal-fat biodiesel
30/06/2014
It has exported 6,000 tonnes of the product, equivalent to 6.7 million litres of biodiesel, coordinated by Dutch company Argos Oil, one of the largest independent fuel distributors in northern Europe.
The fuel sold by JBS will be mixed directly with the conventional diesel distributed by Argos to its customers.
"This was the first time JBS exported biodiesel and it represents a major business opportunity for our product, as it creates an opportunity to expand our customer base,” said Alexandre Pereira, biodiesel director at JBS.
In Brazil, beef fat is the second most popular raw material for making biodiesel. On its own, the fat represents around 20% of biodiesel produced in Brazil and is considered one of the best sources, because it removes a product which was previously considered a waste product from the meatpacking industry and has transformed it into clean fuel.
Manfred Wefers, biofuels trader at Argos, said: "Because of the guidelines created by European governments, the energy market has seen a spike in demand for sustainable and properly certified biofuels. Over the last seven years, the importance of sustainable biofuels has risen significantly, therefore the strategy of originating products in a number of countries provides Argos with the flexibility it needs to obtain the most sustainable products for its mix.”
