JBS seeks quick resolution to Zenda dispute

Reports in daily newspaper El País said workers had some concerns about safety on the factory floor, especially in the beamhouse area, and about seven lay-offs that came into effect at the end of May. Zenda employs around 800 people.
Members of the UOC tannery workers’ union occupied two floors of the Zenda facility, located in the Nuevo París industrial zone to the west of the capital, Montevideo. A spokesperson told local media that the management team did not know the reason for the workers’ protest and said the company wanted to meet union leaders and government officials to find a solution.
Brazilian packer and tanning group JBS took over ownership of the Zenda plant exactly a year ago, as part of its acquisition of Seara. JBS’s leather division, JBS Couros, is now the largest producer of leather in the world.
