Botswana leather park may be back on track

Eight companies have expressed their interest in investing in a leather park in Botswana, according to the president of the country, Ian Khama.

He made the comment during his state of the nation address.

A plan to establish a leather park in Lobatse, in the south east of Botswana, was first discussed in 2013 but there have been several delays due to a lack of funding. The region has long been a centre for meat processing.

President Khama said the park would create “direct employment” for 6,000 to 8,000 people when fully operational. Local sources have said that it would produce around 9,300m2 of finished leather per day, 80% of which would be destined for export.

Earlier this year, Vincent Seretse, Botswana’s minister of investment, trade and industry, told parliament that work on the park, which was due to commence in April 2016, was behind schedule. One of the issue delaying it was an environmental impact assessment. He added that work would now begin in April 2017, with the hope of it being completed by January 2019.
