Lack of tannery suppresses Botswanan leather brand

A Botswana-based leather brand that has international ambitions says its growth is hampered by the lack of a tannery in the country.

Lebang Setso Leather Crafters - whose customers include Michelle Obama, who reportedly bought a bag on her visit to the country - has to source leather from South Africa and Zimbabwe at ‘exorbitant prices’, according to local press.

Based in Taung, near the capital, Gaborone, the owners plan to build a facility to teach their clients about leather making.

The Botswanan government in 2013 had plans to build a tannery, but those plans were shelved due to a lack of funding.
