Botswana puts leather plan on hold

Reports from Botswana say that plans to build an industrial park for the leather industry have been shelved.

The new industrial centre was to be located near the town of Lobatse, in the south-western part of the country, which has long been a centre for meat processing. The plan said the new project could have created 5,000 new jobs.

Botswana’s minister for trade and industry, Dorcus Makgato, was a champion of the new leather and leathergoods production site, but has been told, according to recent media reports, that the government no longer wants to allocate the necessary funds, estimated at more than $25 million.
